Promoting the life and times of Mary, Queen of Scots

Bolton Castle, North Yorkshire – 29 Jun 19

A Summer outing to Bolton Castle, Castle Bolton, North Yorks. – Saturday 29th June 2019.

Bolton Castle in Wensleydale, is one of the country’s best preserved medieval castles. Originally built as one of the finest and most luxurious homes in the land, the castle bears the scars of over 600 years of fascinating history, not least being the prison for Mary Queen of the Scots for six months during the latter part of 1568.

She was allowed some freedoms whilst kept here, and under the eye of her custodian Sir Francis Knollys, she would wander the surrounding lands and often go hunting. In January 1569, she would be removed from Bolton Castle, taken south through a gruelling winter to Tutbury Castle, Staffordshire.

Bolton castle, a Grade 1 listed building and a Scheduled Ancient Monument, is still in the private ownership of Lord Bolton, the direct descendant of the castle’s original owner Sir Richard le Scrope, Lord Chancellor of England to Richard II.
